Everything You Need to Know About the “L” Licence Plate

Traffic is one of the foremost problems facing Istanbul, one of the largest metropolises in Turkey and indeed the world. According to research carried out in May 2019, 11.8 million journeys are made each day in Istanbul road transport, and shuttle vehicles account for 24 per cent of that figure. Among the leading measures introduced to eliminate problems such as unlicensed operators in shuttle transportation, to enforce safety precautions and to ensure that certain standards are met, is the "L" licence plate scheme recently approved by UKOME. So what is the L plate?

What Is the L Plate?

You can think of the L plate much like taxi plates, which begin with the letter "T". In the same way, plates beginning with "L" will from now on be used in shuttle transportation. Under the new arrangement, shuttle vehicles will have a plate of their own, just as route minibuses and taxis do. The L plate will only be used to provide employee and student shuttle services; tourism transport will not be permitted with it.

Requirements for Obtaining an L Plate

Under the decision taken by UKOME, the use of L plates on shuttle vehicles became mandatory as of 1 January 2019. Shuttle vehicles that do not display this plate on the vehicle door and roof in line with the prescribed standards will face penalties. So how do you obtain an L plate?

To obtain a plate beginning with L for use on shuttles, you first need to log in to the İBB TUHİM website and assign a series plate to your vehicle registered in the system. Once the assignment is complete, it is time for the notary procedures. The information needed for the notary procedures and the documents required for the L plate are as follows:

  • To complete the L plate procedures at the notary, you need to be the vehicle's registered owner. If you are not the registered owner, you can carry out the notary procedures once you have obtained a power of attorney.
  • You must have the shuttle transportation authorisation certificate and the vehicle's transport card with you.

Once the procedures are complete, you can have your assigned plate made up and fitted to your vehicle. You may use whichever notary is nearest to you for the plate change.
For any questions about the procedures involved in the L plate and about L plate prices, you can call ALO 153.
