Corporate Basketball League: Why We Sponsored a Team We Knew Would Lose
This season Volt Lines went beyond fielding a team: we became a sponsor of Istanbul's Corporate Basketball League. Not a single one of our shuttles was late all year, and every employee got exactly where they needed to be, but the team couldn't say the same for the scoreboard. On the court, we lost all eight games we played. The sponsorship is the part we'd do again regardless.
Why we sponsored the league
Our reason for sponsoring CBL was straightforward: visibility and a shot at new customers. Every team in the league already belongs to a company; there's no such thing as sponsoring one team over another, since they're all company rosters to begin with. What you can back is the league itself: having our name on the court, the scoreboard, and the season program every weekend puts us directly in front of companies who are also our current and potential customers, no cold calling required.
What the scoreline actually says
For the first time, our operations team stepped onto the court not to check whether the shuttles were running on time, but to actually put up some shots. We played eight games over the season and lost all eight, including two heavy defeats in November (32–108 against Çalık Enerji, 27–108 against Türkiye İş Bankası). But the team gave what it had, and it wasn't just the five players on court. We showed up crowded, not just on the bench but in the stands too, colleagues turning out to watch as much as to play. The season had its own leaderboard, regardless of the score: Ozan Metin Zehir led the roster in assists (11), rebounds (77) and efficiency (68 EFF) for the year, and captain-coach Cihan Doğan led scoring at 13.5 points a game.
One season in
Most of the teams we played this season have had years, in some cases over a decade, to build their rosters. We had one. That gap showed on the scoreboard, not in effort: the crowd in the stands stayed until the final whistle every time. The sponsorship was never tied to the score. It was tied to something closer to employee engagement: watching the same dedication our team brings to the office carry over onto the court, game after game.
